JIA YI : Good morning, Najib. Hey, look! Someone has given me these coloured plastic bags again! I wonder why they keep doing that.

NAJIB : Oh, these are recycling bags provided by the waste collectors for residents in our estate to participate in the National Recycling Programme or NRP.

JIA YI : NRP? Recycling? All my life I have been throwing everything into the rubbish chute, isn't it easy, fast and neat?

NAJIB : Throwing things down the chute may be convenient, but it creates a lot of waste. The waste has to be incinerated, and after that the ash has to be landfilled. We are throwing away so much rubbish that all the landfills on our mainland are already full and we are now using a landfill in the sea! There are many things that can be recycled. By recycling, natural resources such as trees, water, oil, gas and metals can be saved for future generations.

JIA YI :Oh I see, I didn't know that. Well, I do have many recyclable items. Can I simply put all of them into the bags for recycling?

NAJIB : Yes, that is precisely what the bags are provided for. All you have to do is to put the items that can be recycled or reused into the bag. Then place the bag outside your door on the scheduled collection dates that can be found on the bag before 8.30 am and it will be collected for recycling. It's that simple!

JIA YI : You mean we don t even need to sort the recyclables into paper, aluminium cans, plastics or glass?

NAJIB : That s right, you don't have to do that. The collectors will do the sorting. You can help by ensuring that the recyclables are clean and dry, for example, by rinsing drink cans and bottles before putting them into the bags.

NAJIB : One more thing, besides waste paper, bottles and cans, you can also put in unwanted books, magazines, clothes and even toys instead of throwing them away. These items, which can be reused, would be repaired or cleaned up and then donated or sold as second hand goods.

JIA YI : I see. Gee, it sure is a great programme and I hope that everyone in our estate will join the NRP to reduce the waste we generate. I am definitely joining the NRP.

NAJIB : Yeah, I'm glad you think that way. If everyone thinks like you, Singapore will truly be a clean and green city
.

Singapore is a small city state with limited land and no natural resources. In order for our environment to be sustainable, we have to learn to conserve our resources and protect our environment by practising the 3Rs - Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

Recycling is easy. By recycling, you will feel good knowing your unwanted stuff have been given a new lease of life. You will also help to conserve natural resources and reduce waste. So join the NRP today.
