It's
a wave, its a whale, it's
a tsunami... No, it's the arts festival! The annual tide
will reach its summit for a stretch of three and a half
weeks and everybody is invited not only to move with the
flow, but swirl through an assortment of emotions and
experiences offered by local and foreign artistes. In
case you wonder why my language is so 'wet', the theme
for the international arts festival that spans from 30th
May to 23rd June is "Move with the Flow". With
a wide choice of 300 performances from over 16 countries,
coupled with the fact that some of them are easily available
for all age groups as they are performed publicly, it's
really an arts festival embracing egalitarianism.
Two well-known composers, Tan Dun and Michael Nyman, will
offer musical pieces that coincide with the festival's
theme. The former is renowned for his musical score in
Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon while the latter
is popularly known for his Oscar nominated musical score
in Jane Campion's The Piano. Some of their pieces explore
or develop around themes, sounds and images of water.
Murray Perahia, the winner of the 41st Grammy Award for
Best Instrumental Soloist, will promise a spellbinding
evening of Beethoven's and Schubert's piano sonatas. His
intensive study of Bach's work during his long recuperation
from a thumb injury, bore award-winning fruit in his recordings
of Bach's music, especially Goldberg Variations. |
Unfortunately, he is not going to perform the tranquil
piece. If you love Bach, you should not miss the ballet,
Multiplicity, choreographed by Nacho Duato, the resident
choreographer for the Netherlands Dans Theatre. His keen
sensitivity to and extraordinary sensibility for music
mirror those of greatest choreographers like Jiri
Kylian.
For those who have heard or read about the internationally
acclaimed American writer and director, Richard Foreman,
here is a chance to catch, away from New York, his 15th
play written for his Ontological - Hysteric Theatre. In
Richard Foreman's truly avant-garde Maria del Bosco, three
beautiful ladies are infatuated with a racing car. The
audience hears a soundscape juxtaposed with repetitive
poetry, some music and other sounds. See for yourself
why the director calls this play a sound opera.
Core programmes from local and regional artistes include
Mammon Inc, a play based on the novel by Hwee Hwee Tan,
and Occupation, a Festival commission that marks the 60th
anniversary of the fall of Singapore.
Besides the core programmes, other events like Late Nite
Series, Festival Village, Arts on the Move and KidsFest
aim to reach out to more public members.
