Dear Residents & Friends,

Many of us remember the story of Snow White. In the story, there was a Queen who was very beautiful. Every morning, the mirror on the wall tells her so. She was very happy. Then on day, the mirror told her that she was not the most beautiful of all. There was competition from another beauty, called Snow White.

The news shocked and upset the queen. Her dream of everlasting happiness was shattered. She decided to do something aobut it. What choices did she have? First, she could try to put an end to the competition. Second, she would ignore the bad news. Third, she could improve hserself to do better.

The Queen tried to put an end ot the competition by killing Snow White. She also wanted to smash the mirror because it brought news that she did not want to hear. She thought that her plan would bring back the good old days. As we all know, her method did not work and she lost the contest in the end.

In real life, the same is happening, The good old days of strong, continuous growth with lifelong employment were beautiful. We all wished they could go on forever, But times have changed and the news is different.

In a interconnected world, we cannot stop competition elsewhere from challenging us. We do sourselves no good by ignoring th esigns and getting angry at the troublesome changes that come our way. Our best bet for the future is to strength our own capabilities. Time and tide waits for now man.

Instead of getting worked up, we must instead work ourselves up the skills, value and innovation laddders. When we have the skills and experience that fast-growing, fast-changing business need in this brave, new economy, we will increase our chances of making a good living.

Lifelong Learning is a key area that the Central Singapore Community Development Council will be promoting. Our Community Learnning Fund helps residents take the first step. Our Young Entrepreneurs Awards and Franchising Workshops encoursage students and working residents to explore the new business enviroment. I have just announced a new programme, called the Major's Imagine! Central Singapore Fund, to stimulate and implement new ideas to make our Disctrict even more vibrant and charming. see more Details at our website!

Mayor's Imagine Fund and Mayor Essay Writing Competition 2002
Youths are the future of our nation. To encourage more youths to be actively involved in the community building process, the Central Singapore CDC has launched two new programmes aimed at bringing out the creativity and passion in our youths-the Mayor's Imagine Fund and Mayor Essay Writing Competition.

The Mayor's Imagine Fund, as the name suggests, is a pool of funding that youths can apply for to help make their wishes for the community come true. Youths below the age of 25 can submit their proposals to help improve the community that they live in as an individual or as a group. Approved proposals will receive up to $10,000 funding. In addition, the youths will also receive help and mentorship from Central Singapore CDC to make their project a reality.

For those who prefer expressing their ideas and vision for the community through their pens, the Mayor Essay Writing Competition is just the thing for you! We are now calling for entries from all students. The closing date is 28 June 2002. All entries will have to begin with the line - "If I were Mayor...". Putting himself or herself in the shoes of a Mayor in Singapore, youths are expected to pen down what they would do as a Mayor to promote a more harmonious and cohesive community. Attractive prizes await the winners and their schools!
