Despite
a light drizzle on the morning of Sunday, 20 July, over 700 people
gathered at Bishan Stadium for the Central Singapore Food and Heritage
Trail 2003 at 8.30am!
Last year, the trail attracted a 500-strong participation and received
the International Festivals and Events Award (IFEA) - Best Community
Outreach Programme presented by the International Festival & Exhibitions
Association. Central Singapore CDC brought back the well-received
trail this year with a special theme on Racial Harmony to promote
greater appreciation of our various races and cultures.
Upon the flag-off at 9.30am by Mr Zainudin bin Nordin, MP for Bishan-Toa
Payoh GRC, 506 participants eagerly hopped onto the 12 coaches (complete
with tour guides) while 205 others set off with team members in their
cars. Participants were brought on a tantalising trail of colour,
aroma and sight as they raced through 30 distinguished and undiscovered
food outlets of various races within the Central Singapore District.

San Phor Kark See Monastery, Masjid Sultan and Sri Vairavimada Kaliamman
Temple, and learnt about the historical and cultural backgrounds of
each site.
At the end point at Clarke Quay, those with the highest score for
the food and heritage quiz were duly rewarded as Mayor Heng Chee How
presented the prizes of vouchers and hampers. Three teams were also
awarded for the Best Dressed Team and Best Decorated Car category
each, for displaying their creative juices in dressing up their cars
and turning up in ethnic costumes. |
